From Kolkata, India, the story of a man found living in his room with his dead sister and her two dead dogs. Police were alerted to the situation when they were called to a fire at an apartment. The fire was caused by a 77-year old man lighting himself on fire in an apparent suicide. But they were not prepared for what they found in the next room.

A trail of smoke from the bathroom brought the police to the doors of a flat in central Kolkata’s Robinson Lane this morning. Inside, they found a burnt body, a skeleton, bags of bones and a man who is apparently mentally unstable.
Police found the body of Arabinda De in the bathroom — he had apparently set himself on fire, they said. Preliminary investigations indicated that the bathroom door was locked from the inside, an officer said.
In the next room they found the skeleton of Mr. De’s sister, who had fallen into depression after her two dogs died last year. She stopped eating and soon died. Mr. De refused to accept her death, so he kept her body and those of the two dogs in his bedroom and refused to come out.
Police said “he suffered from hallucinations that her soul visited them for dinner every night.”
Partha De, 44, was found locked in his bedroom with his sister’s rotting corpse and those of her two dead dogs.
Debjani De, 50, descended into depression after her two dogs died last year. She stopped eating until she died.
Police were called to the apartment when smoke came billowing out from under the bathroom door. The owner of the apartment had set himself on fire in a suicide.
