I have a lock on the Pont des Arts in Paris. At least I used to. Me and more than 700,000 others.
Not anymore. The Parisian government is removing the sections of the bridge with the locks. They say that, after years of tourists placing locks to commemorate their love, the weight is just too much for the bridge to bear.
Gee, we hope that’s not an omen for the relationships those locks represent!
The locks weighed down the bridge an additional 45 tons, and engineers have had growing concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge.
Workers began removing the locks in sections. They are storing them until they decide what to do with them. Some could be melted down, and others could be used in art installations in the future.
No plan yet on removing the 700,000 keys dumped off the bridge into the river below.
City officials insist that this should do nothing to tarnish the worldwide reputation of Paris as the City of Love.
