Corpses beheaded, bodies weighted down with rocks, buried with a sickle curving over their bodies, anyone thought to be a vampire was buried in a way so they hopefully could not wake up and come back for victims. Apparently they had experienced demons reanimating corpses and they were thought to be vampires. Sounds more like zombies to me, eh?
Vampires is not a new theory since the times of Bram Stoker. Even in ancient times they believed in vampires. In fact, they buried them in certain ways. They even had “anti-vampire” burials which included bury their loved ones with coins to ward off evil spirits.
In Poland they found six corpses singled out, separated from the rest of the burials outside the city. Unfortunately these “vampires” were not as we would envision them with their top hats and dapper attire. Nope, these were dressed like poor farmer, one was even a child. But don’t let that fool you. These six people were believed to be very dangerous, “vampires” that would come back from the dead inhabited by demons. It was obvious by the seriousness of their burial that this was not a laughing matter.
Even just several hundred years ago the idea of vampires was very real. There is record of finding corpses thought to be vampires when alive. University of Manchester archaeologist Stephen Gordon says, “vampire” graves in various parts of Europe have been found where iron stakes have been driven through the rib cage. In other burials, he notes, the head has been severed and placed between the legs.
“In my opinion we should be very careful,” agrees Polish-burials expert Leszek Gardela of the Institute of Archaeology at Poland’s University of Rzeszow in an e-mail to USA Today. In my opinion, they were buried that way for a reason and messing with them could be dangerous. You can kill a human but a demon lives on. I mean why would you put a sickle across someone’s corpse unless you want to make sure if they rose that their head was lopped off.
The local villagers believe in vampires and the way that these bodies were buried shows you how serious they take it.
