Apparently Cover Girl and other companies are now stealing “Goth” and making it main stream. A new line by Katy Perry within the Cover Girl family is now promoting their Goth & Alternative makeup as current and popular.
We aren’t hating on Katy Perry. I like that she is weird and out of the box and making the Pale Heart (non-Goths) more accepting of our culture. It also means there will be more brands to buy black lipstick and Goth style makeup from.
But, Goth is more than fashion, it is music, art, literature, architecture, a complete state of mind. You aren’t “Goth” by wearing black lipstick. You aren’t a Dark Soul because you wear a cat-eyeliner. Goth is inside you. You’re a Dark Soul. Someone who sees the beauty in the dark. Sees the beauty in the macabre. Thinks differently than the mainstream population. That is what brings us together as a community. We can have polarizing opinions on religion and politics but we are brought together by the fact that we understand one another. We understand the dark side in our lives.
So what does this “mainstreaming” Goth mean for our culture? Other than more black lipstick brands, I don’t know. How do you feel about this? What do you think the impact will be on our culture? We’d love to hear from you on our Facebook page.
Below we’ve posted 18 photos of Katy Perry sporting different Goth looks over the years.
