I love dreads. I admire those who rock them. Do you have dreads? What do you think?
1. RESIDUE FREE SOAPS/SHAMPOOS
It is a complete myth that you can’t wash dreadlocks. The number one thing you need to do…is keep clean dreadlocks. The way to do it is to wash in residue-free soaps and shampoos. Make sure you are using natural ingredients, so you dreadlocks stay clean and don’t look bad.
2. PALM ROLL YOUR DREADS
The best way to keep your dreads tight is to palm roll them. Use a little bit of wax when you start rolling them.
3. BLOW DRY YOUR LOCKS
When your dreads get wet, they can smell horrible. Never put them up in a hat or enclose them when they are wet. This will make it worse and they can grow mold. You can either let them air dry, but if you don’t have time it is perfectly fine to blow dry them.
4. NEVER USE WAX ON WET HAIR
Applying wax to wet hair creates a massive nasty mess. If that is the look you want, then go for it. But most of us want well maintained dreads. If you want easy to maintain dreads, then you need to apply wax and palm roll them when your hair is very, very, very dry.
5. WEAR A BAND AROUND YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU SLEEP
It is important to wear a type of band around your head when you sleep. This keeps wax from getting on your pillow, which gets on your face and ruins your complexion, and your pillow. Simply tie a thick scarf around your head and preserve your face.
6. THERE IS A CURE FOR ITCHING
Dreadlocks certainly can itch. Also, as they start to get tighter they can itch even more since they are pulling on your scalp. There are lots of creams and sprays for itching but a natural remedy is a few drops of peppermint essential oil. There are also peppermint creams out there too.
7. RUMORS BEWARE
So, I’ve heard you can start dreadlocks with stuff from you kitchen like mayonnaise or butter. That is really gross. This can bread bacteria and mold in your hair. Stick with products specifically for dreadlocks. There are lots of synthetic or natural products depending on your personal preference.
8. MAKING DREADLOCKS THICKER
The amount of hair in each dreadlock dictates how thick the dread will become. Therefore the only real way to increase their size is to use bigger sections. If your dreads are real new comb a few out and starting those ones over again using larger sections. If they are more mature you can combine two dreads by tieing them together with a rubber band or pro elastic at base and tip. This will encourage the new growth to merge together and eventually you may be able to snip off the part which hasn’t merged. You might also find a dread cuff helpful in binding the two dreads together
9. GETTING RID OF LUMPS OR BENDS
Okay so most lumps will work themselves out as the dreads tighten and smooth out. But, if you have a severe lumpBends however appear if the dreads tighten too fast. So different strands of hair are tightening at different speeds causing your dreadlock to bend. Eventually, the hair will all tighten and the bend will work itself out.
